Put on your best poker face, ladies
For author and business woman Ellen Leikind, poker isn’t just a card game — it’s a metaphor for life. Why you need to stop playing like a girl.
“You don’t need to have the best hand to win.” says Ellen Leikind of Poker. “You just need to make people think you have the best hand.
This and other lessons from the poker table mirror situations in everyday life, says Leikind, so she found a way to translate these concepts to help women better play by the rules. The results in her new book, “PokerWoman: How to Win at Love, Life, and Business Using the Principles of Poker.”
“You have to play to win as opposed to avoid losing.” says Leikind on the differences between men and women both in terms of the game and their professional lives. “Men typically do a better job at playing to win — they want to get all the chips. Women tend to want to protect the chips they already have.”
The PokerWoman herself relates the game the choices we make in life. “You want to pick the right game for you, just like you want to pick the right person for you, just like you want to pick the right job for you — and you want to pick the right stakes.”
Leikind recognizes how hesitant some women are of playing in the “boys club.” but encourages them to “be bold because the prizes in life go to the bold.”
After all, if you never even play your hand, you’ll never be able to make the most of it. “I think fear is what holds a lot of people back.” she says. “A lot of women are afraid to take their rightful seat at the table.”
Ellen Leikind wants you to get in the game — and not be afraid to take a little gamble.
